The
fact that according to subjective morality, everyone can have their
own equally valid moral value about any issue related to morality and
that there is no absolute truth, has some serious real world
ramifications and in turn leads to subjective morality adopters, for
example Ultra-Liberals, having certain viewpoints and having certain
corresponding behaviors and taking certain corresponding actions in
the real world.
Ways Of Resolving Public Issues
For example, whenever there is a given social/political issue under contention, and a person or group wants their position and value(s) to prevail over those of other people/groups with opposing ones, there are basically three options. Though, the acceptability of those options can be different between subjective morality adopters and people who believe in objective values and absolute truth (eg. Christians):
1. Through discussion or debate, persuade the
people/groups of the opposing side to change their
value(s)/position(s) and/or win the support of the general public; or
through discussion negotiation reach a compromise with the opposing
side.
2. Have or acquire sufficient power via established
social mechanisms (eg. organizing supporters to go and vote in an
election, public info campaigns, lawful protests) and try to prevail.
3. Have or
acquire sufficient power via non-established social mechanisms (eg.
media censorship, unlawful protests, riots) and try to prevail.
For
Christians and most non-Christians who are not subjective morality
adopters, methods one and two are acceptable, and not method three.
Conversely, for a sizable and growing number of subjective morality
adopters, and especially Ultra-Liberals, the second, and particularly
in recent years, the third methods, acquiring power as a means to
have one's positions and values prevail, seem to be the preferred
methods. This is in particular relevant for American society, since
politically one of two of America's major political parties, seems to
have a relatively large percentage of its members who are hold to
subjective morality and/or are Ultra-Liberals.
Having the acquisition and use of power become the primary method used to determine and decide public policy and political issues for a growing number of Americans has a few very detrimental consequences for the nation.
The first is that it leads to a more volatile social environment and a very "polarized" political environment. Polarization in and of itself is not bad, but the way it is handled and resolved in a society is important, and in recent years those things are what has caused various social and political problems.
Secondly, to a growing number of Americans, the concept of having discussion and debate as a method to help reach a determination on public/political issues, becomes unimportant, becomes considered a waste of time, and sometimes even becomes something to be actively avoided. As a consequence of this, facts (ie. absolute-objective truth), which are often exposed through the discussion and debate of issues, become obscure or covered over, and so become largely irrelevant.
The Trending Way Of Resolution
Instead of discussion-debate resolution, to prevail on any given issue the important thing becomes having on one's side, or through various strategies and tools, acquiring (and since facts do not matter, plus because of the subjective morality precept that people can validity have their own truth, there is no need to be honest about facts in those efforts) a sufficient enough number of dedicated and/or enthusiastic people from the general population so to have enough power to prevail on the issue. Such a state of affairs would seem to be a main reason of why Ultra-Liberals often seem to be comfortable with, and sometimes even directly create*, social environments where people either can not, or are fearful to, have discussions about issues with other people who may express a different option or viewpoint; places such as at work, and social media platforms.
Another point that should also be noted, is that with such state of affairs, even having and/or recruiting only a relatively small minority percentage of the population to one's side of an issue can be enough to prevail, if they are sufficiently dedicated and/or enthusiastic.
*For example, this is quite possibly the root cause behind most of the recurrent incidents over the past number of years, of college admin/students disrupting the speaking engagements of certain speakers whose views or values they disagree with.
The end result of such a situation is that the American democratic system's fundamental mechanism of public engagement, discussion/debate and then the ballot becomes overridden, and it becomes about power.
The
Companions of Power
As a side point, when it becomes about power, there are a few companions of power worth briefly giving some attention to:
Control - A means to acquire and/or maintain power is control. Various aspects of the imposition of control has been observed in American society in recent years; in certain governmental legal and regulatory areas, and in actions such as social media censorship.
Details - An element connected with facts that also becomes practically irrelevant is details. Hence, the avoidance of details becomes the norm, and it becomes acceptable and much more feasible to use misnaming, pure propaganda, hollow jingoism and similar tactics in efforts to try to prevail on public policy or political issues. In essence the state of affairs becomes that so long as something sounds good/beneficial, it does not matter if the absolute-objective truth is that it is not good/beneficial or does not do what it is named or claimed to do.
Fear - Whether of the reasonably well founded kind, to the totally unwarranted kind, it historically has been used to gain or maintain power in a society. Unjust labeling of people or events is a tool often used to create and promote fear.
Some Related Contemporary Issues
Below are a few issues that American society is currently dealing with, which are in one way or another connected to the idea of resolution of public issues through power:
* Media indoctrination of children about matters related to sexuality
* Companies promoting things which do not have a consensus of the general public of being morally good and/or consensus of being personally approveable
* School boards' reassigning of parental responsibilities and rights to teachers and school administrators
