Moral Relativism:
What Is It And Where Does It Come From?

Christianity teaches that basic human rights, and moral values come from God. On the other hand, moral relativism is a set of beliefs that says that basic human rights and values come from natural sources such as a society, a government, or Evolution (for a fuller explanation see Terms and Definitions). Consequently, Christianity and moral relativism are fundamentally in conflict and incompatible with one another. It should be noted that a Christian’s non-subscription to any given doctrine may or may not indicate that they believe in some form of moral relativism (i.e. moral relativism to some degree); that determination depends on the specific doctrine and the particulars of the reason(s) for their non-subscription to it.

The Bible's Commentary

Moral Relativism is not a new concept, it has been around as long as mankind has been around. There are numerous verses in the Bible that deals with it:

–- God, with understanding of mankind’s nature and basic tendencies, preemptively warns people against moral relativism in Deuteronomy 6:10-12;

And it shall be, when Jehovah thy God shall bring thee into the land which he sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee, great and goodly cities, which thou buildest not, and houses full of all good things, which thou filledst not, and cisterns hewn out, which thou hewedst not, vineyards and olive-trees, which thou plantedst not, and thou shalt eat and be full; then beware lest thou forget Jehovah, who brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. (ASV)

–- Another passage concerning moral relativism is Matthew 15:7-9;

Ye hypocrites, well did Isaiah prophesy of you, saying, This people honoreth me with their lips; But their heart is far from me. But in vain do they worship me, Teaching [as their] doctrines the precepts of men. (ASV)

–- An important message given concerning Christians, and a message that may be particularly relevant in the modern era, is 2 Timothy 4:3;

For the time will come when they will not endure the sound doctrine; but, having itching ears, will heap to themselves teachers after their own lusts; (ASV)
